By the way, I think your products are outstanding! I have a mare who gets extreme summer allergies. She gets so itchy she rubs until she has open sores. I have her on a low dosage of dexamethasone to keep her from rubbing herself to pieces, but even with the steroids, she still rubs enough to tangle her tail and rub off the hair on her shoulders and neck until I started using the Groomer. I rub Groomer on her itchy spots, inside her legs and on her belly. Now even on exceptionally hot and humid days, she is not fanatically rubbing. Her hair is growing back and she is no longer destroying her tail. She is calm and obviously more comfortable than she has ever been during the summer. Thank you, Ellen B. Pinckney, MI
Missy - I used your groomer on Sprocket’s hindquarter where the skin problem was taking place. Three days after using the groomer the bumps went away. I used it for a few more days after to be sure that the skin was cleaned and healed. Sprocket is now a happier dog and I do not worry when I brush him. I still have a lot of the groomer left and will store it safely for future use. Thank you for the hard work and research! Safe rides, Vaughn Brown, Certified Equine Massage Therapist. Quincy is a Natures Balance Boy!
Quincy is a beautiful 17 year old QH gelding who experienced a terrible burn due to a chemical fly spray. His neck and flank area were burned and peeling with his skin wrinkling. Who would have known that he was so sensitive? His owner, Suzy of Northbrook, Illinois, immediately started treating his burns with Natures Balance Care Groomer and Bare Skin Barrier while using the Fly Condition Spray to keep flies from taking advantage.
Beautiful Quincy before the chemical burn

Quincy’s Neck & Flank - Ouch!

Seven Days Later - Suzy says Quincy is a “Natures Balance Boy”

Congratulations!

Sweet Itch Factor
Does your horse have a skin problem?
![]() |
If so, your horse is probably having a Sweet Itch outbreak. The medical term for Sweet Itch is “hypersensitivity to insect bites” basically an allergic reaction to the cullicoide midge fly. Many horses suffer this extreme skin allergy when the midge bites. Your horse can get immediate relief with Natures Balance Care Groomer. The picture below was taken 6 days after the first initial outbreak. The horse was treated with the Groomer once in the morning. You can find these products under Horse & Livestock Care Products.

Sweet Itch needs to be treated internally as well since it is an immune response. I had a horse in training last year that had the worst case of Sweet Itch than the poor guy shown above. He boarded with us for a year after his training receiving Dynamite Plus vitamins & minerals along with NTM salt. The boarder horse was the “next door” paddock neighbor of the horse above, but the boarder did not have any outbreaks this year. The horse above had only been here a month receiving Dynamite vitamins and supplements; not enough time on Dynamite products to build his immune system. Even two of my horses that are prone to minor Sweet Itch outbreaks (sometimes their faces peeled around their eyes and down the side in addition to their chests & bellies - awful looking) did not have any outbreaks this year. I have to contribute it to the supported immune system by the Dynamite products. My horses have been on Dynamite a year and a half and that is the only thing I have changed with respect to diet. We even have more flies since we added the training arena and increased the number of horses from 4 to 10, but my horses and the boarder were exempt from allergic reactions this year! Missy - I wanted to tell you that I used the Natures Balance stuff on Timber’s bug bite scabs under his front legs and his hind legs and it cleared them up in one treatment. I’m impressed! Sue Sweet, Drain, Oregon
Missy - I have been learning about using natural oils for human and animal use. This is my third order from Natures Balance. I am so pleased with the Fly Condition Spray Concentrate. My mare does not even have to be haltered when I apply the Fly Spray. The 'chemical" fly spray I used to use on her "worked", but she had to be haltered to get her to stand still while I applied it. Now I know what she was trying to tell me!! I am so glad to be free from harsh man made chemicals. As I rub her down I think about all the chemicals I used to absorb and now all we both are getting is wonderful natural oils. Karen Martin, Texas
Missy -When I go out of town one of my friends cares for my horses. I come back and in just a few days they are all bitten up (they just don’t get spraying them down really works!). A little Groomer and most of the swelling from the bites is gone. I had only two deer ticks the entire summer!!! And my horses are out 24/7!! We have had a lot of rain here (Illinois) and the mosquitoes this year were horrible. As long as I gave them a good spray after I threw hay at night, they were fine, even though they’re out all night. Karen Smith, Crete Island, Illinois.
Missy - Great Stuff, very effective, a pleasure to use!! Maureen Radke, Alberta Canada
Newsletter Commentary
Physiology of Stall Feeding: Given that the horse is designed by nature to be moving 18 to 22 hours a day (and snoozing the rest), I don't think there can be a correct physiology of stall-feeding. I have kept up to seven horses on my 3 acre pasture (right now there are 5 permanently) and still have plenty of grass. I feed more hay during the dormant months, keep a natural pasture (no pesticides or chemical fertilizers), and have no shoes on my horses (shoes tear a pasture apart, not to mention the negative effects on the horse). You are correct that feeding from ground level is best for them, for all the reasons mentioned in your December 05 newsletter; however, if they are kept in stalls, that head will be up most of the time anyway so they can see the other horses. That's the other factor that stalls do not allow for - herd life (very strong instinct with horses). In my opinion, it is better to have them out 24/7 in a dirt lot where they can enjoy herd life with lots of good quality hay, then in a stall half a day and out on lush pasture (not what nature intended for them either) the other half. I have heard the argument about not destroying the grass many times (when I used to board my horses), but it seems to me the horses' health (mental and physical) is more important than that of the grass. Horse Journal Volume 12 Number 5 May 2005 - "To our surprise, we seemed to have better results from the natural-ingredient concentrates than with the chemical concentrates." Natures Balance Care was the first and IS the original all natural ingredients product producer for the horse and owner industry! All the competitors finally realized that the horse owner wants a healthy natural alternative at a cost effective price. Natures Balance Care is the pioneer and leader in the industry. It is a compliment when others try to copy.
Missy -Just wanted to let you know that I LOVE your products. Everything works beautifully!!! I've been putting the bare skin barrier under Jake's hind legs and belly where all the ticks were biting. I haven't seen any more lately so that's great! Also, it has really seemed to help the bites he already had there. He just stands perfectly still and lets me rub it on...(I think he likes it:) Also, I've been putting some fly spray on my hand and rubbing it under the hollow part of their jaw... it has helped tremendously. That area normally stays eaten up with bites all summer... but putting the spray there has really made a difference! Lucky, the thoroughbred I take care of, has really sensitive skin and sometimes has a reaction to regular fly spray. Your products have been working great with him. Everybody also got a bath this weekend and a rub down with the groomer. Everything is just so great... Thanks so much... I'll be ordering refills soon. Crystal, Temperanceville, VA
Missy - I really am enjoying your horse grooming products and natural fly repellent and so are my horses! You have a great horse product that repels all the biting flies and mosquitoes, plus I did not have any bot eggs this year. I tell everyone about it. Keep up the good work. Cindy - Fairview, OR.
Missy - Hello, I wanted to again thank you for donating some of the Natures Balance products for our rescue horses. Two horses in particular, Hayley & Magic, benefited wonderfully from them. They both had rain rot and now have shiny healthy coats. I know you are a small company and I just love what you are doing with the natural ingredients. Magic is in need of surgery. Would you consider donating more products for an auction we are having to raise money for him? Any help would greatly be appreciated. Susan Sheridan, Bay State Equine Rescue Inc.. 415 Hunt Rd, Oakham, MA 01068 508-882-3704. Yes - Natures Balance will donate horse products for Magic's needed surgery. If anyone would like to help, please contact Susan at the above number.
Missy -Just a note to say I've been using your Barn Spray I ordered and love it! You have really done a good job in your research and development. I don't understand why anyone would use anything different to keep the flies and bugs off. I'm spreading the word. Thanks, Judi Roach, Texas
Benny the Rescued Horse
Benny came to my barn as his third home after being rescued by the Humane Society. He had spent the last 2 years in a stall and and had fecal matter stuck to him past his belly and shoulders. By the time I got him his skin had healed from the circumstances, but he was still under weight with an eye infection and ears a mess. He received an antibiotic for his eyes and I used Groomer twice a day on his ears and Skin Condition Formula at night. By the end of a week his ears had cleaned up nice, no more gooey sticky matter and the antibiotics worked for his eye condition. He soon got bit by my gelding through the fence leaving chunks of flesh gone from his neck and rump. We quickly hot wired the drinking area since this was the offending place and used Groomer to wash the wounds. I administered Bare Skin Barrier to promote healing and reduce "white hair growth". Benny is doing great and gradually building his weight back. His eyes sparkle and he smells sweet! Picture on left is November 2004 and picture on right is 6 months later May 2005. He is healing and restoring beautifully.
Missy - We have been successfully using your products for our horses for about 6 months. It works great against the flies and biting gnats. Thanks for your time and excellent products. Laurie Flood, Canada
Missy - This HAS been a hostile Fly/gnat/midge season (summer 2004). I'm so glad I bought more of your products because they are helping my mare SO much. She doesn't get the bumps from midges, so I've always suspected some kind of fungus that gets somehow "activated" when she sweats. Her worst itchy areas are between her front and hind legs, down the insides of her legs and her face/ears, mane and tail. I finally started using the Groomer in a bucket and using a sponge to wipe her down. I use about 4 droppers full for about 24 ounces of water. I did this once a day for about 4 or 5 days because her WHOLE body was itchy and I thought she would push the barn down!! Now I do it every 3 days or so, and her rubbing has completely stopped. I always make sure I get it down to the tail bone and into the base of her mane, thought I don't have to be as diligent about this anymore. I like the Fly Spray especially because I know it is safe to use around their feed and feed bins. I just wanted to thank you for your diligence in doing research and creating a great product! Cindy Ross, California.
Missy - I've been using your products for about 10 days now, and we are hooked! What an improvement over the chemicals. I'll be reordering by the end of the month. Thank you for creating a healthy alternative for me and my horses. Gretchen, Idaho
